EU Battery Regulation 2025: How Sellers Can Meet the New EPR Requirements

EU Battery Regulation 2025: How Sellers Can Meet the New EPR Requirements

Overview Beginning on 18 August 2025, the European Union will implement new rules requiring extended producer responsibility (EPR) for anyone who sells batteries or products containing them within the EU. Under these rules, Amazon and other platforms must ensure that sellers are properly registered with national authorities, report sales, and pay environmental fees.

Why this matters

The regulation is part of a broader move toward a circular, sustainable economy in Europe. Sellers can no longer ship battery‑powered products into the EU without taking responsibility for the batteries’ lifecycle. Failure to comply could lead to suspended listings, fines or surcharges from Amazon.

Who must register?

Businesses based outside the destination country that sell battery‑powered products directly to consumers in that EU member state.

Businesses based inside a member state that manufacture, import or market products containing batteries.

Practical steps to take

Map your product catalogue – Identify which products include batteries, from toys and handheld electronics to small appliances.

Appoint an authorised representative – Companies established outside the country of sale need a local representative to handle registration and reporting.

Register in each relevant country – File the required EPR paperwork with the environmental authorities in each EU country where you sell. Procedures vary by country, so start early.

Report and pay fees – Once registered, you must file annual reports on the volume of batteries you’ve sold and pay the corresponding recycling fees.

Submit registration numbers to platforms – Marketplaces such as Amazon will ask you to provide your EPR numbers to prove compliance. Do this before the deadline to avoid disruptions.

Although the new obligations may seem complex, they’re an opportunity to show your commitment to sustainability. Sellers who embrace the regulations and communicate their efforts can strengthen trust with European consumers and avoid supply chain interruptions.
